Give

Since its founding, the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development has partnered with communities and organizations to design and deliver research-based leadership training. With a community-centered approach, the Fanning Institute is particularly well-equipped to support under-resourced communities and underserved populations in their leadership development efforts. At the core, the Fanning Institute highlights the direct correlation between a community’s investment in leadership training and that community’s overall vitality and prosperity.

Giving Priorities

Innovations in Community Leadership Initiative

Launched in 2020 by the Fanning Institute, the Innovations in Community Leadership Initiative (ICLI) provides technical expertise and resources to support communities and organizations in
starting or enhancing leadership development programming. Communities are invited annually to submit leadership projects or initiatives for consideration. Fanning faculty then collaborate with selected communities to co-create and implement solutions to address a community’s leadership challenge through in-kind technical assistance and instruction.

Nonprofit Capacity Building

Nonprofits play a critical role in meeting the needs of our communities. Demands on nonprofits are constantly changing and their leaders must adapt. The Fanning Institute’s nonprofit training incorporates strategic planning support for all stages of nonprofit development; board governance and policy development; and helping organizations build the leadership capacity of their boards, volunteers and staff.

Peer Court

Peer Court is a youth diversion program for juvenile offenders but also serves as a leadership program for youth where they can learn about the many facets of the justice system. By volunteering as lawyers, judges and jury, participants work alongside other youth who have been charged with misdemeanor offenses. Aimed at reducing recidivism and developing leadership skills, peer court programs can play a crucial role in communities seeking to provide juveniles with a second chance. Launched in 2020, the Judge Horace J. Johnson, Jr. Peer Court Initiative honors one of the state’s most respected judges. This initiative supports the implementation of youth peer courts in communities across Georgia.

Foster and Homeless Youth – Embark Georgia

Embark Georgia is a nationally recognized college access and retention program for youth who have experienced foster care or homelessness. Embark Georgia has established a designated point of contact at every University System of Georgia and every Technical College System of Georgia institution (53 campuses statewide) and supports them with specialized training, education, networking, resources and funding for student needs. Several of the campuses have developed programs to serve students more effectively and to help them stay on track to graduate. Regional leadership training and gatherings strengthen the ability of education professionals to seamlessly support students from high school to college.

Supporting Student Work

Service-learning at the J.W. Fanning Institute means “learning by doing” and connecting students with opportunities to put their knowledge into practice in real settings. Fanning serves communities throughout Georgia, and opportunities abound for students to work alongside staff and faculty who are helping create jobs, develop leaders and address the state’s critical challenges. Your support will enable them to travel with faculty and staff into the communities we serve so that they can see firsthand the need, issue or problem, build the critical skills essential to their careers, and earn valuable real-world experience.
