Last night Athens Peer Court welcomed its 12th cohort of youth volunteers to the program. This group marked the 200th volunteer to complete Athens Peer Court training. In addition to developing leadership skills, participants from local middle and high schools learned how to interview clients, write and deliver opening and closing statements, and to identify aggravating and mitigating factors.
The students worked with University of Georgia law students to practice their interviews. An undergraduate student intern studying Criminal Justice also helped administer the training.
The training concluded with two mock hearings for parents and family as well as a graduation ceremony with welcoming words from Juvenile Court Judge Robin Shearer.
