The Latino Initiative fosters collaborative efforts to institutionalize activities and programs that build awareness and coordinate the development, implementation, and assessment of teaching, research, and outreach to the growing Latino community. A key focus of the Initiative is to strengthen the Latino educational pipeline through outreach, on campus programs, research, and teaching.

Current Program and Collaborative Efforts

  • University Alliance: A Partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund
  • Padres e Hijos Fin de Semana: A Bilingual Conference for High School Senior and Parents
  • Gear Up for College: A Pipeline Initiative Program for Middle School Students
  • Leadership ¡Sin Limites! A Youth Leadership Program
  • Latino Advisory Board: An Interest Group of UGA Faculty, Staff, and Students

RESULTS—UGA has increased enrollment of Latino students. In 2008, the number of Latino students admitted to UGA grew by 47%, for a total of 153 freshmen or 3.1% of the class, the highest number ever. The number of Latino undergraduate students at UGA has increased annually from 343 students in 2000 to 608 students in 2008—from 1.4% to 2.4% of the student body.
