Welcome
to YLIA: A High School Focus
Congratulations! You have been especially chosen as a member of this
high school leadership class. There are few high school courses anywhere
in the United States that can be compared to this one. It had its beginning
in Elbert County, Georgia, in 1994 when the chamber of commerce and
the Principal of Elbert County Comprehensive High School (ECCHS), Dr.
Tim Wheeler, requested the Fanning Institute at The University of Georgia
to develop an accredited leadership program for high school students.
This course was taught during the 1994-1995 school year at ECCHS by
Susan Fricks (Teacher of the Year in 1992). It was piloted in ten schools
in northeast Georgia during the 1995-1996 school year.
This two-semester
course is called Youth Leadership in Action: A High School Focus,
and the curriculum has been especially written for you. The things you
study in the next few months will be helpful to you the rest of your
life. You will learn more about yourself, your fellow students, and
the community than you ever dreamed.
This course
is divided into three units: I-Me, II-You and Me, and III-All of Us.
The lessons are designed to be studied sequentially, with each concept
building on the previous one. You will learn many skills which will
help you grow as a high school leader.

will have lessons in the classroom that vary from lecture to hands-on
experiences.
