Overview
  • A unique program offering opportunities for students in grades nine through twelve to develop leadership skills
  • May be used as a resource for Social Skills 1 (#35.0510000) elective
  • Allows students to experience hands-on activities and to interact in real-life leadership settings
  • Appropriate for use in public, private and alternative high schools
  • Segmented for 180 classroom days in 102 lessons (block schedule option available)
  • Detailed Instructor Manual with introductory notes, goals, learning objectives, materials lists, directions, and additional resource suggestions
  • All student worksheets and background notes in Student Workbook
  • Accumulated skills and knowledge applied to plan and implement a community project

Woven throughout the curriculum are tenets of Dr. J.W. Fanning's Pillars of Leadership: integrity, ethics, creativity, knowledge, listening, motivation, hope, concern, vision, and sharing.

Special Features

For students:
  • Varied learning methods—self-assessment instruments, popular videos, case studies, production of a play or forum, outside speaker resources, role- playing, journal-keeping, visit to State Capitol during legislative session
  • Mentoring—by community leaders and with younger students; learning about roles by spending a day shadowing a community leader
  • Field trips—to local businesses, industries, health and educational organizations; attending and evaluating civic, governmental and special-interest group meetings; conducting a community assessment as the basis for designing a community project
For teachers:
  • Pre-test and post-test instruments; test questions and formats
  • Student and parent commitment contract samples
  • Chart of popular video titles illustrating specific leadership concepts
  • Opportunities for positive local media coverage and community involvement
  • Teacher training workshops
