Youth Leadership in Action: Community Focus - Content
 

Session One: Understanding Leadership
Goal: To establish a foundation for understanding and exercising leadership
Objectives:
  1. Gain knowledge about selected leadership theories and concepts
    2. Identify characteristics and behaviors of proven and effective leaders
    3. Gain new insights into themselves as leaders
    4. Practice selected leadership skills
    5. Develop a personal leadership development plan to exercise leadership in daily life

Session Two: Taking Charge
Goal: To recognize the sources and effects of stress in students' lives and practice ways to manage stress
Objectives:
  1. Define stress
    2. Recognize that stress can have positive outcomes
    3. Identify the sources and indicators of stress
    4. Illustrate ways to manage personal stress
    5. Develop personal stress management strategies

Session Three: Communicating Effectively
Goal: To recognize effective communication as an important skill in leadership development

Objectives:

  1. Define communication
    2. Identify the communication process
    3. Examine four modes of communication
    4. Practice effective communication skills
    5. Develop strategies to improve personal communication techniques

Session Four: Appreciating Differences
Goal: To develop an appreciation of differences among people

Objectives:

  1. Define differences
    2. Develop awareness of characteristics that make one unique
    3. Recognize that in diversity there is strength
    4. Explore ways to retain individuality while appreciating the differing styles, talents, abilities, and values of others

Session Five: Building Teams
Goal: To develop teambuilding knowledge and skills

Objectives:

  1. Define team
    2. Clarify roles and rules within a team
    3. Identify elements of effective teams and team problem solving
    4. Identify the five conditions for effective teamwork
    5. Practice teambuilding skills

Session Six: Managing Conflict
Goal: To develop skills in managing conflict

Objectives:

  1. Define conflict
    2. Examine individual conflict styles
    3. Recognize change as a source of conflict
    4. Identify ways to manage conflict
    5. Discuss the positive aspects of conflict
    6. Develop personal strategies for managing conflict

Session Seven: Setting Goals and Making Decisions
Goal: To develop and practice goal-setting and decision-making skills within the community context

Objectives:

  1. Define community
    2. Identify the steps in the decision-making process
    3. Practice group decision-making
    4. Recognize the relationship between successful decision-making practices and community action

Session Eight: Exercising Community Leadership
Goal: To develop an awareness of the local community and the steps to follow
in exercising leadership in the community

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the value of and ways to conduct a community assessment
    2. Identify actions which could be taken to address the problems suggested in the community assessment
    3. Review the steps to follow in exercising community leadership
